The change from ridge to gully matters
Sassafras Gully and Birdwood Gully are distinctive parts of Springwood's bushland setting. Council identifies Sassafras Gully as a reserve, while Destination NSW describes local walks through gullies and past waterfalls. The built-up ridge and sheltered lower ground should not be treated as one uniform habitat.
At home, the transition may be a sloping backyard, a lower garden terrace or an open under-house area. Shade, accumulated material and gaps around retaining structures can make a snake difficult to see. These are sensible features to discuss during a call, without assuming that a nearby reserve is the source of the animal.

The research dataset contains 192 snake rehabilitation records assigned to Springwood during July 2011–June 2020. These five recorded names provide local context; counts reflect reported animals, not the number living in the suburb today.
Recording effort, reporting patterns and the type of incident affect these figures. The list is not a complete species inventory or a probability of your next encounter. “Carpet Python” and other names are reproduced as recorded, without assuming a subspecies.

Concealed ground, vegetation edges and moisture are useful things to consider. The places below explain local habitat and property situations; they are not verified current hotspots or directions to find snakes.
Sassafras Gully Reserve
A local bushland landmark that puts the suburb's gully habitat in context. Give wildlife room on walks; do not leave the track to follow a snake.
Birdwood Gully setting
Sheltered vegetation contrasts with exposed garden areas higher on the ridge. Check current access information before visiting and avoid placing hands into unseen crevices.
Lower terraces and subfloors
For a household call-out, the most useful detail is often which level the snake reached and whether that space connects beneath the building.

Pause gardening and move away without stepping into vegetation to get a better view. If the snake disappears beneath a retaining wall, mark the position mentally using a fixed feature and tell the catcher. Do not pull rocks out or poke into a gap.
Keep other household members off the steps leading down to the affected terrace. Let us know if the lower level is accessible only through a narrow passage or by steep stairs. We can plan equipment access from that information rather than asking you to investigate the hiding place.
